Cat Grooming Tips and Techniques

Make you cat look pretty

Cats are much easy to groom than dogs, if you start a habitual routine in its life from an early stage. Grooming them once a week would suffice, but that would not be for longhaired breeds like the Persian or Birman that needs grooming almost everyday to avoid matting. Grooming is vital for your cats and kittens. While grooming your cats you not only get to know them but also make sure that they don't have any wounds or fleas in their coats. Cats are quite independent and do a lot by themselves, however your grooming would keep them away from any diseases or health problems.

Tips on grooming your cats:

The first thing to keep in mind before grooming is to know your kitten or cat well - its likes and dislikes.

You need to be patient and have lots of time for the job.

Cats are pretty sensitive so be extra careful especially with their fragile ears and stomach area.
Cats tend to swallow quite a bit of their own hair while grooming itself, these hair forms hair-balls in their stomach which may also cause blockage. So you need to regularly comb them to get rid of loose and matted hair.

Different kinds of combs are available for different breeds like wide-toothed for longhaired, fine-toothed for shorter hair and very fine combs to remove fleas and dirt.

Next in the list would be bathing your cat. Most cats and kittens enjoy playing in the water while some don't. Giving them regular baths can reduce matting & tangling of hair in longhaired cats. Even medicated shampoos are available for certain skin conditions but you need to consult a vet before using them

Another important part of grooming is trimming your cat's nails. You need to be confident while doing this job. For the first time ask your vet to show you the correct way of doing it. Purchase the right equipment that is a pair of nail scissors or trimmers. You need to clutch their paws gently, so that the nail projects out and then carefully trim them. Make sure you don't touch the quick that grows through the center.

Just in case the claw bleeds while trimming don't panic, as it would stop eventually, apply some Vaseline or press gently with tissue or cotton ball.
